Google AdSense is a platform for an advertising program operated by Google. Website operators can register with Google AdSense if they want to earn money with advertising blocks in the form of banners or links on websites.

For each click on a context-related advertising medium displayed via the Google program, the so-called “publisher” receives a fee. Google AdSense is therefore comparable to an affiliate program.

Google AdSense can also be described as a complementary platform to Google Ads because it allows the publisher to earn part of the money that advertisers pay for their ads through Google AdWords.

The Google Ad Sense system was launched by Google in 2003. In the beginning, publishers could only display text ads on their websites.

Since 2009, Google AdSense is also usable for the control of advertising banners. To date, Google has paid more than 5 billion euros to publishers.

Google AdSense is the largest network in the world with its display advertising space. According to Google, 80 percent of Internet users can be reached.

How it works

To sign up for Google Ad Sense, the publisher must have a valid Google Account, operate or maintain their own website or blog, and be at least 18 years of age.

In order for Google to pay the click fee, a publisher must also have a valid bank account. The limit amount for a payout is 70 EUR. If the click commission is higher, the advertising fee is transferred monthly to the specified account.

Quality Guidelines

In order to keep the quality of the publisher pages and thus the attractiveness for advertisers via AdWords as high as possible, Google checks every website before it is included in the Google AdSense advertising program.

Both content and technical factors play a role here; there are a total of 13 factors. For example, webmasters who run websites with content that is harmful to minors, pornographic or glorifies violence, or who sell tobacco, alcohol, or weapons are not allowed to include advertising blocks via Google Ad Sense on their webpages.

Criteria for the exclusion of AdSense are also copyright violations or manipulated clicks on links in the advertising blocks published by the publisher.

The quality checks also take place at regular intervals after the inclusion and are carried out both by the algorithm and manually. If a page does not meet the quality requirements, it will be excluded from AdSense.

Selection of advertising media

When selecting the advertising blocks, the publisher has the option of adapting them to the layout of his page in terms of color and graphics.

Banner or link advertising blocks are available for selection. Google already provides all common banner sizes via the AdSense user interface.

In addition, the website operator can also decide in which areas of his page and on which sub-pages of his project Google should display advertising.

The number of possible advertising blocks in Google Ad Sense is limited to three banners and three-link blocks on content pages.

If the publisher has decided on a certain banner format or a link block and optically adapted it to his page layout, they can integrate the corresponding code as a placeholder on their website.

Some CMS systems offer their users pre-installed advertising space. Blog systems such as WordPress or Blogger can also facilitate the integration of AdSense advertising blocks with the help of appropriate plug-ins.

In order to check the correct insertion of the banners, any ad blockers that are activated should be deactivated at short notice or an exception should be defined for the page in question.

Google also specifies its offer to site operators with other AdSense products:

  • AdMob: AdSense for Apps
  • Ad Mobile: AdSense for websites optimized for mobile phones
  • Interactive Media Ads (IMA): AdSense for Games and Videos

Level of click prices

The amount that Google pays for a click on the publisher’s site is not fixed at a flat rate, as the click price at Google is based on several factors.

On the one hand, the popularity, number of impressions, and visitor behavior of the publisher website have an influence on the amount of the click fee, on the other hand, it plays a role in how strong the competition within Google AdWords customers is for a certain search term or topic area.

The more cents or Euro AdWords customers bid to click on a text/banner ad for a specific keyword or placement, and the higher the Google rating of a publisher’s website in terms of traffic, visitor behavior, and content quality, the higher the click amount a publisher receives on the AdSense platform.

Google Analytics and AdSense

If you choose the Google AdSense advertising program from Google, you can analyze the evaluations of clicks on the advertising banners on your page and optimize your revenue by optimizing the placement of advertising banners or link blocks.

To do this, they can use the AdSense administration interface or link their Google AdSense account, if available, to the GoogleAnalytics account for even more precise analysis.
